What a sovereign AI workspace is

A sovereign AI workspace is a company-hosted alternative to Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT Enterprise. Staff get chat, document question-answering and retrieval over internal knowledge, but prompts, files, embeddings and model weights stay inside the organisation’s own EU boundary — on-premises or in a private EU cloud the company controls.

How Copilot and ChatGPT Enterprise actually work

Microsoft Copilot is a productivity layer on Microsoft 365. It is excellent when your estate already lives in M365 and you accept Microsoft’s tenancy, subprocessors and model routing. ChatGPT Enterprise is a hosted workspace on OpenAI’s cloud: stronger general models, still a US-controlled processing path unless you negotiate a specific residency add-on — and you still do not own the serving stack.

Neither product lets you pick the model weights, pin inference to your GPUs, or prove to a regulator that no embedding of a contracts folder left your network. For many teams that is fine. For legal, clinical, industrial and public-sector workloads in the EU, it is often the blocker.

When Copilot is the right answer

  • The workload is email, slides and SharePoint summaries — not source-of-truth legal or clinical records.
  • Procurement already standardised on Microsoft and will not fund a GPU cluster.
  • You can accept Microsoft’s data-processing terms and residual US legal reach.

When a sovereign workspace wins

  • Prompts include customer files, trade secrets, health data or unpublished financials.
  • You must show a supervisor where inference ran and that embeddings never left the VPC.
  • You want to fine-tune or swap models without renegotiating a SaaS SKU.
  • Works councils or customers have already blocked Copilot on data-residency grounds.

Practical split: keep Copilot for low-sensitivity office work if you already pay for it. Put the sovereign workspace on the corpora you cannot afford to leak. LMXAI designs that split so staff are not asked to “just be careful”.
